Make Summer Count: Why a Little Learning Goes a Long Way

Summer break is a time to relax, recharge, and enjoy well-earned freedom from the school-year grind. It’s a season for camps, travel, creativity, and quality family time—experiences that are just as important for a child’s development as academics. But while summer should be fun, it’s also a great opportunity to keep young minds active and confident.

Just like athletes stay in shape with regular practice, students benefit from keeping their brains engaged over the summer. Without some form of academic reinforcement, it’s common for students to lose key skills—especially in reading, writing, and math. This is known as summer learning loss, and it can make the transition back to school more challenging than it needs to be.

Why Summer Learning Matters

When school routines pause completely, it can take time for students to regain academic momentum in the fall. Many students return to school having forgotten material from the previous year or feeling rusty with study habits and classroom stamina. Even with review at the start of the school year, it can be hard to catch up quickly—especially in cumulative subjects like math or writing, where new concepts build on old ones.

But this doesn’t mean summer should look like school. In fact, just a small weekly commitment—as little as two hours per week—can help students stay sharp while still leaving plenty of time for rest, play, and adventure.

Our ERG Summer Programs are designed to offer the best of both worlds: academic support that’s lightweight, flexible, and fun, while reinforcing essential skills and preparing students for a strong school year.

A Stronger Start in the Fall

Students who stay engaged over the summer return to school more confident, prepared, and motivated. They start the year with strong foundations—and more energy to tackle new challenges ahead.

As Brian Herbert put it, “The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” By adding a bit of structured learning into your summer plans, you’re giving your child the tools to choose success.
